What we walked into
He spent his working life looking after other people's gardens and kept this hedge in shape himself for years. When he couldn't any more, it was left for about two years and got away from him.
A long reach hedge cutter and a standard hedge cutter took it back down and in at the sides in about an hour.
Filmed and posted September 2026. Watch the full job on our YouTube channel.

Don't leave conifers too long
Most conifers, especially leylandii, won't grow back from brown wood. If a hedge is left two or three years it can still be brought back, as long as the cut stays in the green. Leave it much longer and you lose the option.
Cutting once or twice a year keeps a conifer hedge at the size you want and keeps the job, and the price, small.
