CASE STUDY: HEDGE REDUCTION

Sixty Metres of Twenty Foot Privet Hedge, Reduced

What we walked into

The hedge had been left to grow until it was about twenty foot high along sixty metres. The tenant's kids couldn't play out because of it.

It should have been a day. All three of us had the flu, so it took a day and a half. Under the hedge we found an old fence, random rubbish and more footballs than we could count.

Filmed and posted September 2026. Watch the full job on our YouTube channel.

How we did it

Step by step

  1. Height first

Brought down from about twenty foot.

  2. Sides back

Cut back in to free up the garden.

  3. Clear underneath

Old fence, rubbish and footballs pulled out.

  4. Three loads away

Waste taken away in three loads, £300 of the price.

Worth knowing

How to price a big hedge

Hedge work is mostly about volume of waste. On this job the cutting was £920 and the waste was £300, almost a quarter of the total. If you've got space to compost or burn it, ask, because leaving it can save real money.

Privet takes hard cutting well and greens back up from bare stems, so a big reduction like this is safe as long as it's done outside nesting season.
