CASE STUDY: HEDGE CUTTING

Leylandii Hedge Cut Into the Brown: Putting It Right

He loves doing his own garden and cut the back hedge fine, but on the front he went too far into the brown on a leylandii. He got us in to tidy it up and make the best of it.

The job

What we walked into

He's an older gentleman who likes doing it himself, and to be fair to him the back hedge was spot on. On the front he cut into the brown, and on a leylandii that isn't coming back any time soon.

We went back in to tidy it up and make the best of what was left green.

Worth knowing

Leylandii won't grow back from brown

Leylandii, like most conifers, only regrows from green foliage. Cut back into the brown inner wood and that section usually stays bare.

The safe rule is to never cut back past the last bit of green. If a leylandii has got too big for that, it's often better to talk about a new hedge than a hard cut.
