A Kidwelly team, 4 miles up the road

We are Keltic Grounds Wales, a family run gardening business based on New Street in Kidwelly. Ferryside is about 4 miles from us by road, so it is an easy village for us to get to, whether you want one big tidy or someone to keep on top of things all year.

In Ferryside we can cut and reduce hedges, mow lawns on a fortnightly round, clear gardens that have got away from you, clean patios and clear gutters. You can have a job quoted, or book one, two or three of us for a day and hand us your list.

Local knowledge

Gardening on the Tywi estuary

Ferryside sits at the mouth of the River Tywi, looking across the water to Llansteffan, with its own railway station and a lifeboat that has been based in the village since 1835. It is a lovely spot, but gardens here take more wind than most of the ones we look after inland, and that wind carries salt.

The RHS points out that salt spray carried on the wind affects a lot of plants that are not resistant to it. That is why the tougher hedges do best by the sea. Species it lists as tolerant of coastal sites include hawthorn, blackthorn, sea buckthorn, tamarisk, gorse and Ebbinge's silverberry (Elaeagnus × ebbingei), and it also suggests griselinia for coastal planting.

Soil near the sea also tends to be sandy and quick to dry out, so in a dry summer we leave lawns a little longer rather than scalping them.

Hedges that face the estuary

  • A hedge on the exposed side is often doing the job of a windbreak. The RHS says a good one filters around half the wind rather than stopping it dead.
  • The RHS also says a windbreak shelters the ground behind it for about ten times its own height, so taking a hedge right down has a cost.
  • Solid fences can cause eddies on both sides, so before you rip out a battered hedge, let us look at a reduction first.
  • From March to August we check for nesting birds before we cut. If a nest is in use, that section waits.

Hedges we have cut close to Ferryside

Our hedge cutting in Kidwelly page covers the hedge jobs we have filmed locally, including ones in Llansaint, the village between Kidwelly and Ferryside, and in Trimsaran.

The video here is a conifer hedge in Kidwelly that had been left for about two years. One of us, a long reach hedge cutter and about an hour later it was back down and in at the sides, for £100.

Ferryside questions

How far is Ferryside from you?

About 4 miles by road from our base on New Street in Kidwelly, so Ferryside sits well inside the area we cover.

Which hedges cope best with the salt wind in Ferryside?

The tough ones. The RHS lists hawthorn, blackthorn, sea buckthorn, tamarisk, gorse and Ebbinge's silverberry as tolerant of coastal sites, and it suggests griselinia for coastal planting too. Whatever you have already, we can trim it or reduce it.

Should I swap my wind battered hedge for a solid fence?

Not without thinking it through. The RHS explains that a windbreak works best when it filters some of the wind, and that a solid barrier can cause damaging eddies on both sides. Get us to look at the hedge first, because a trim or a reduction is often enough.

What happens to the hedge clippings?

If you pay for waste removal, we take them away as a registered waste carrier. If not, they go in your green bin or we leave them tidy on site. A whole day booking includes one van load of green waste.

Will you dig out the old roots when you clear a bed?

No. We cut back to ground level or low stumps, and digging out roots is never part of our quotes.

How do I get a price for my Ferryside garden?

Fill in the quote form, call or text 07888 293 754, or book a team for a day if you have a list of jobs. Lawn mowing starts from £30 a cut, and most lawns are £35.
