What we walked into
She looked after this hill herself for years. On top of the brambles and bracken, contractors clearing the power lines left their cuttings on the hill, twice, which made it even harder to get on top of.
We're working through it in stages. Each visit pushes the cleared area further across the slope, and we've cut a path through the brambles to reach the trees.

Step by step
Footing first
On ground this steep, safe footing comes before speed.
Blades on the brambles
Brushcutter blades on the woody growth, line where it's lighter.
Mask for bracken
A mask on when cutting bracken, because of the spores.
Stage by stage
Visits every couple of weeks, so the client spreads the cost.
Blades, line and kickback
Blades cut woody brambles far faster than line, but a blade that touches something solid can kick the cutter sideways. On a slope that matters even more, so we keep a wide stance and cut with the safe side of the blade.
Bracken releases spores when it's cut, which is why we wear a mask on this job. If you're tackling bracken yourself, do the same.
