What will your lawn renovation cost?
Short answer: lawn renovation costs £7.80 per square metre with us, with a £400 minimum. That covers the weed kill, scalping, scarifying, top dressing, reseeding and taking all the waste away. An 83 m² lawn we quoted recently came to £650. Pop your measurements in below for your own estimate, then send a photo for a fixed price in writing.

A full renovation in four steps
For lawns that are more weeds, moss and bare patches than grass.
Kill off the weeds
A full weed kill so the old weeds and coarse grass don't come straight back through the new seed.
Scalp it down
The old lawn is cut right down low so the seed can reach the soil.
Scarify
The scarifier rips out the dead thatch and moss that smother a tired lawn.
Top dress and reseed
A compost and topsoil blend goes on to level the dips and give the seed something to root into, then the new seed goes down.
What lawn renovation doesn't include
- Digging out roots or stumps.
- Major levelling or regrading of slopes.
- Drainage works.

What changes the cost of a lawn renovation
- Size. It's priced per square metre, so a bigger lawn costs more. Anything that works out under £400 is charged at our £400 minimum.
- What's under it. Roots, stumps, big slopes that need regrading and drainage problems aren't part of a renovation. If we spot any of them in your photos, we'll tell you before we quote.
- Whether it needs a renovation at all. If your lawn is mostly there but mossy and thin, a scarify and aeration or a lawn care plan could be enough, and that costs less.

Which one is right for you
A renovation keeps your existing soil and levels and grows a new lawn from seed. It costs less than half the price of turf, but it takes a few weeks to fill in and it's best done in early autumn or spring.
New turf gives you a finished lawn on the day, any time the ground isn't frozen or baked. It costs more, and it needs plenty of water for the first couple of weeks. See planting and turfing.
If your lawn is mostly there but mossy and thin, you might not need either. A yearly scarify and aeration could be enough.
Common questions
How much does lawn renovation cost?
We charge £7.80 per square metre for a full renovation, with a £400 minimum. An 83m² lawn we recently quoted came to £650. Use the calculator above for your own lawn.
What's the difference between renovation and scarifying?
Scarifying and aeration is a lighter yearly job for a lawn that's basically healthy. A full renovation strips the old lawn back and starts again with new seed, for lawns that are mostly weeds, moss or bare patches. See scarifying and aeration.
When is the best time to renovate a lawn?
Early autumn, from late August to early October, while the soil is still warm and there's reliable rain. Spring is the second best time.
How long before I can use the lawn?
Grass seed usually comes through in one to three weeks depending on the weather. Keep off it as much as you can for the first month or so while it establishes, and keep it watered in dry spells.
Is it cheaper than new turf?
Usually, yes. Renovation is £7.80 per m² against £18 per m² for new turf, but it takes longer to look finished. If you need a lawn ready quickly, turf is the way to go. Try the turfing calculator.
Do you dig out roots?
No. We don't dig out roots or stumps. If something needs grinding or digging out, we'll tell you before we quote.
Can you set up watering?
Yes. We can set up a temporary sprinkler so the new seed gets watered while it establishes. Ask about it when you send your photos.
