What planting and turfing doesn't include
- Digging out old roots or stumps. If the ground is full of roots, we'll tell you before we quote.
- Hard landscaping such as patios, walls or fencing.
When to plant and turf
Autumn and spring are the best times to lay turf, because the soil is warm and moist and the roots knit in quickly. Summer turfing works too, but it needs a lot more watering.
New turf should be laid within a day of delivery, watered well, and kept off for two to three weeks while it roots. The first cut should be on a high setting once the turf has knitted into the soil.
Bare-root hedging and trees are planted from November to March while they're dormant. Spring and summer bedding goes in after the frosts, and winter bedding and spring bulbs go in during autumn.

Common questions
When is the best time to lay turf?
Autumn and spring, when the soil is warm and moist. Summer turfing is possible but needs daily watering in dry spells.
How long before I can walk on new turf?
Keep off it for two to three weeks while it roots. Lift a corner gently, and if it holds, it's rooting in.
How do I look after new turf?
Water it well straight after laying and regularly for the first couple of weeks, more in warm weather. Mow on a high setting for the first cut once it's rooted.
Can you turf after a garden clearance?
Yes. A clearance followed by new turf or planting is one of our most common jobs. We'll quote both together.
Do you dig out roots before turfing?
No. We clear, level and prepare the surface, but digging out roots and stumps is a separate heavy job. If the ground is full of roots, we'll tell you before we quote.
