What's involved
Moss treatment first
Moss killed off a couple of weeks before scarifying, so it comes out cleanly.
Scarifying
Dead moss and thatch raked out of the lawn with a powered scarifier.
Aeration
The lawn spiked or hollow-tined to relieve compaction and let air and water in.
Overseeding
New grass seed spread into the scarified lawn to fill gaps and thicken it up.
Top dressing
A light top dressing worked in to help the seed and level small dips, if the lawn needs it.
All waste taken away
The moss and thatch we pull out is collected and taken away. There's a lot of it.
Lawns we've saved
Most lawns we're asked to save just need the basics done properly: moss and thatch out, air in, seed down and regular mowing.
Here are a couple we filmed.

The right time for renovation
Early autumn, from September to mid October, is the best time to scarify and aerate. The soil is still warm, there's plenty of rain, and the grass has time to recover before winter. Spring, from April, is the second best time.
Be ready for the lawn to look worse before it looks better. A well-scarified lawn can look thin and scruffy for three to four weeks while the new seed comes through. That's normal, and it's what makes it thicker afterwards.
Lawns in Carmarthenshire get a lot of rain, and wet, shaded, compacted lawns are where moss thrives. Aeration helps the lawn drain, which tackles one of the main causes of moss coming back.

Common questions
When is the best time to scarify a lawn?
Early autumn, September to mid October, is best. Spring, from April, is the next best. Avoid hot, dry summer weather and frosty winter weather.
Why does my lawn look worse after scarifying?
Scarifying pulls out a lot of dead material, so the lawn looks thin for three to four weeks. The new seed fills it in, and it comes back thicker than before.
What's the difference between scarifying and aeration?
Scarifying removes moss and thatch from the surface. Aeration makes holes in the soil to relieve compaction and let air and water down to the roots. Most tired lawns benefit from both.
How often should a lawn be scarified?
Most lawns benefit from a scarify once a year. Very mossy lawns may need a couple of years of work to get on top of it.
Is this included in your lawn care plans?
Our lawn care plans cover regular treatments through the year. Scarifying and aeration can be added as a one-off or built into a plan.
