What you get

Bamboo removal in Llanelli and Carmarthenshire

We cut it down, we clear it and we take every bit away. Here's exactly what that includes.

Every cane cut to ground level

We cut the whole stand down to ground level, old canes, new shoots and the lot, so you can see the ground again.

Cut back to the fence line

If it's pushing through from next door, we cut it back to the fence line on your side and clear what's come under.

All of it taken away

Canes and leaves loaded up and taken to a licensed site. We're a registered waste carrier with Natural Resources Wales.

What our bamboo removal doesn't include

  • Digging out the roots, rhizomes or runners. We cut to ground level only, and we say so in writing on every quote.
  • Digging trenches or fitting root barriers. That's a digging job too, so it's not part of our price.
  • Building or drain damage. If bamboo has got into walls, paving or drains, you need a surveyor, not a gardener.

We'd rather be straight with you now than have you surprised when shoots come back in spring. Read on for what actually happens next and what your options are.

Why it comes back

Cutting it down isn't the end of it

Bamboo spreads underground through rhizomes, which are thick stems that run sideways under the soil. The RHS says they mostly sit in the top 30cm of soil and can spread over a metre a year, often without you noticing until shoots pop up.

There are two main kinds. Clumping bamboo, like Fargesia, has short rhizomes and stays in a tight clump, so it's fairly easy to manage. Running bamboo sends its rhizomes out sideways, sometimes metres from the main plant, and that's the one people end up calling us about.

Cutting the canes tidies it up straight away, but the rhizomes are still alive under the ground, so running bamboo will push new shoots back up. A rhizome can also regrow from any joint, which is why chopping through them with a spade or rotavator can actually spread it.

After we've cut it

Your options to stop it coming back

Once the canes are gone you can actually see what you're dealing with. These are your choices from there.

Keep cutting the new shoots

Cut every new shoot down as soon as it comes up. With no leaves the plant can't make new energy, so the rhizomes slowly run down their reserves. It takes patience and it won't happen in one visit, but there's no digging. You can do it yourself, or we can come back and do it as part of a regular visit.

Put a root barrier in

A purpose made barrier around the bamboo or along the boundary. The RHS says it needs to go at least 60cm deep, stick up at least 7.5cm above the soil, and overlap by 30cm at the joins, sealed so there are no gaps. It's a trenching job for a landscaper. We can cut and clear first so they've got a clear run at it.

Have it fully dug out

The only way to get rid of running bamboo for good is to dig out the clump and every rhizome. Mature clumps can root down as deep as a metre, and any piece left behind can regrow. That's a specialist bamboo removal job, and the RHS points people to a specialist for big ones too. We don't do it, but cutting and clearing first saves them time.

If it's coming from next door

We can keep your side cut back to the fence line, but it will keep coming while the plant is still growing on their side. The long term fix is a barrier along the boundary or the source being dealt with, so it's worth a chat with your neighbour.

How it works

Bamboo removal in four steps

  1. Send photos

A few photos of the bamboo, how far it has spread, and the fence line. Send them through our quote form.

  2. Fixed quote

A written price, waste included, that says clearly we cut to ground level and don't dig out roots.

  3. Cut and cleared

Every cane cut down to ground level and the area raked over so you can see the ground.

  4. Done and gone

Every bit taken to a licensed site. Bamboo shouldn't go in a home compost heap, so it doesn't stay with you.

Prices

What bamboo removal costs

Every bamboo job is priced on its own, because a small clump by the shed and a stand that's taken over half the garden are very different days. Send us photos and we'll give you a fixed price in writing, with the waste included.

For big stands, or bamboo that's part of a bigger overgrown garden, you can also book a team for a day and we'll work through as much as we can.

Bamboo Removal FAQs

Common questions

Do you remove bamboo in Llanelli and the rest of Carmarthenshire?

Yes. We cover Llanelli (SA14 and SA15) and nearby Felinfoel, Dafen, Furnace, Pwll, Bynea, Llwynhendy and Penyfan, plus Kidwelly, Burry Port, Pembrey, Carmarthen, Trimsaran, Pontyates, Pontyberem and Cross Hands. Further out, message us first.

Do you dig out bamboo roots?

No. We cut every cane down to ground level, clear it and take it all away. Digging out the rhizomes is a much heavier specialist job, so we leave it out of our quotes and say so in writing.

Will bamboo grow back after you cut it down?

Running bamboo usually will, because the rhizomes are still alive under the ground. To stop it you can keep cutting the new shoots so the rhizomes run down, put a root barrier in, or have a specialist dig it out.

How much does bamboo removal cost?

Every job is priced on its own. Send us a few photos and we'll give you a fixed price in writing, waste included. For big stands you can book a team for a day: 1 person £360, 2 people £600, 3 people £840, or half days from £200.

The bamboo is coming from next door. What can you do?

We can cut it back to the fence line on your side and take it all away. To stop it coming back, the plant on their side needs dealing with or a barrier needs to go in along the boundary.

Do you take the bamboo away?

Yes. Everything we cut goes in the van and is taken to a licensed site. We're a registered waste carrier with Natural Resources Wales, so you don't need a skip or a trip to the tip.
