A gravel path or border usually costs £8 to £30 per m² fitted in the UK, according to MyJobQuote's landscaping guide updated in August 2026. Our prices are £22 per m² for bark, £32 for gravel and £36 for slate, all supplied and laid, plus £7 per m² for weed membrane, with a £350 minimum, so a 20m² bark bed on clear ground with membrane is £580, and you get a fixed price in writing once we've seen a photo.
What landscaping costs in the UK
MyJobQuote's garden landscaping cost guide, last updated in August 2026, gives these typical prices for common jobs, fitted.
| Job | Typical UK price |
|---|---|
| Gravel path or border | £8 to £30 per m² |
| Laying turf | £13 to £20 per m² |
| Artificial grass | £65 to £80 per m² |
| Patio | £80 to £120 per m² |
| Decking | £100 to £125 per m² |
The same guide puts landscape gardeners at £30 to £60 an hour. For bark and other mulch, Checkatrade's garden landscaping cost guide, which we checked in November 2026, gives typical costs of £12 to £38 per m². MyJobQuote's turf laying guide, last updated in October 2026, puts standard turf at around £13 per m² fully installed and luxury turf at around £15 per m². None of these guides says clearly whether its prices include VAT.
Our landscaping prices
We do the simple side of landscaping: bark beds, decorative stone and gravel, slate chippings, weed membrane and new turf. These are the same rates our landscaping cost calculator uses. They're guide prices. Your fixed price comes in writing once we've seen a photo, and it doesn't change once agreed.
| Work | Our guide price |
|---|---|
| Weed spraying, light weeds | £6 per m² |
| Hand weeding, light weeds | £10 per m² |
| Weeding and clearing, overgrown | £18 per m² |
| Weed membrane supplied and pinned | £7 per m² |
| Bark supplied and laid, about 75mm deep | £22 per m² |
| Decorative stone or gravel supplied and laid, about 50mm deep | £32 per m² |
| Slate chippings supplied and laid | £36 per m² |
| New turf laid | £18 per m² |
| Green waste taken away | £150 per van load |
| Minimum job | £350 |
Not sure how big your bed is? Measure the length and the width in metres and times them together. A border 10 metres long and 2 metres deep is 20m².
Our gravel at £32 per m² is above MyJobQuote's £8 to £30 range, and it's £39 per m² with membrane. Our bark at £22 per m² sits inside Checkatrade's £12 to £38 for mulch. Our turf at £18 per m² is inside MyJobQuote's £13 to £20 for laying turf, but above the £13 to £15 its turf guide gives for standard and luxury turf. Our general labour rate of £45 per man hour is inside the £30 to £60 an hour MyJobQuote gives for landscape gardeners. We'd rather show you the real numbers than a price that only looks low.
Worked examples
Here's how the maths works on some common jobs, using the rates above. Our online calculator shows a range around these figures, from about 10% less to about 15% more, until we've seen the job.
| Job | Working | Guide price |
|---|---|---|
| Bark bed, 20m², clear ground, with membrane | 20m² at £7 plus £22 | £580 |
| Gravel border, 20m², clear ground, with membrane | 20m² at £7 plus £32 | £780 |
| Small bark bed, 10m², clear ground, with membrane | 10m² at £29 is £290, so the minimum applies | £350 |
| Slate chippings, 15m², light weeds sprayed, with membrane | 15m² at £6, £7 and £36 | £735 |
| Overgrown bed, 20m², cleared, membrane and bark, one van load of waste | 20m² at £18, £7 and £22 is £940, plus £150 | £1,090 |
| New lawn, 30m² of turf | 30m² at £18 | £540 |
On clear ground with membrane, bark works out at £29 per m² and gravel at £39 per m². Because of the £350 minimum, a small bed is often worth doing at the same time as the path or border next to it.
What's included
- Weeds dealt with first. Light weeds sprayed or hand weeded, or overgrown ground cut back and cleared, depending on what you choose.
- Membrane pinned down. Weed membrane supplied and pinned under the bark or stone, unless you'd rather go without.
- The finish laid. Bark laid about 75mm deep, stone or gravel about 50mm deep, or slate chippings, all supplied by us.
- A tidy finish. Edges tidied and the area left clean, with any green waste taken away if you've booked it.
What it doesn't include: patios, walls, driveways or building work of any kind. We don't dig out roots either. Plants and shrubs are cut down to ground level.
WhatsApp a photo of the area and a rough size to 07888 293 754 and we'll usually send a fixed price in writing the same day. We carry £5 million public liability insurance and we're an upper tier waste carrier registered with Natural Resources Wales (CBDU036241). If anything isn't right, tell us within 7 days and we'll come back and sort it free. See our landscaping page for more on how we work.
What changes the price
- The size of the area. We price by the square metre, so a bigger bed or border costs more.
- The finish. Bark is the cheapest at £22 per m², decorative stone or gravel is £32 per m² and slate chippings are £36 per m².
- The state of the ground. Clear ground costs nothing extra. Light weeds are £6 per m² sprayed or £10 per m² hand weeded, and overgrown ground is £18 per m² to clear.
- Membrane. Weed membrane is £7 per m² on top, and you can leave it out.
- Green waste. If there's waste to take away, it's £150 per van load.
- Thicker layers and other membranes. The price changes if you want a thicker layer of bark, slate or stone, a heavier duty or different type of membrane, or a double layer of membrane.
- The minimum job. Anything that works out under £350 is charged at £350.
Bark, gravel or slate?
Bark is the cheapest finish and suits beds around shrubs and plants. It breaks down over time, so it needs topping up every so often. Gravel and slate cost more to lay but don't rot, and they suit paths, borders and areas you want to walk on. If you'd rather have grass, our turfing cost calculator works out a new lawn at £18 per m².
Bigger jobs: book a team for a day
For bigger garden jobs you can book a team for the day instead: 1 person £360, 2 people £600 or 3 people £840. Half days are £200, £340 and £480. A whole day includes one van load of green waste.
