Hedge cutting in Burry Port

Near the coast, a lot of gardens use tough, wind-tolerant hedging, like escallonia, griselinia and privet. They grow well but get thin and gappy at the base if they're only ever cut at the top.

We cut the sides with a slight taper, wider at the bottom than the top, so light gets down to the base and the hedge stays thick from the ground up. You can see a big privet reduction we did in Burry Port below.

What we cut

Every kind of hedge

Conifer and leylandii

Trimmed back to shape, or reduced in height, without cutting into old brown wood that won't grow back.

Privet, laurel and beech

Cut to a clean line on the sides and top, with the shape you want kept from year to year.

Tall hedges

Up to about 4 metres with ladders and long-reach pole cutters. Taller than that, we'll say so honestly.

Hedge reductions

Big overgrown hedges taken down in height and width, done in stages if the hedge needs it.

Clippings cleared

Every clipping raked out of borders, lawns and paths and taken away as a registered waste carrier.

Nest checks

From March to August we check for active nests first. If birds are nesting, that section waits.

Hedge cutting Burry Port FAQs

Common questions

Do you cut hedges all over Burry Port?

Yes, including Pembrey, Pwll, Trimsaran, Kidwelly and the rest of SA16. We're based in Kidwelly, so we're never far away.

When is the best time to cut a hedge?

Late summer through to winter is the easiest time, because most birds have finished nesting. The RSPB recommends avoiding hedge cutting from March to August. You can still trim in spring and summer, but we always check for active nests first, because damaging one is an offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.

How tall a hedge can you cut?

Up to about 4 metres with our ladders and long-reach pole cutters. For anything taller, or anything needing climbing or a cherry picker, we'll tell you straight and quote for it separately.

Can you cut a conifer hedge right back?

Only so far. Most conifers, including leylandii, won't regrow from old brown wood, so cutting back past the green leaves leaves a bare patch for good. We'll tell you how far yours can safely come down.

Do you take the hedge clippings away?

Yes. All clippings are raked out of borders and lawns and taken away as a registered waste carrier. It's included in the price.
