Hedge cutting in Pontyberem
Pontyberem sits further up the Gwendraeth Fawr. It was a coal village, and Pentremawr colliery worked here until the 1970s, so most homes are terraces and semis on the valley sides, with farmland and woodland all around.
Pontyberem gardens often have a mix of old field boundary hedges and planted conifers, and the conifers that went in years ago are now getting too tall to manage from the ground.
We cut the sides with a slight taper, wider at the bottom than the top, so light gets down to the base and the hedge stays thick from the ground up.

Every kind of hedge
Nest checks
From March to August we check for active nests first. If birds are nesting, that section waits.
Conifer and leylandii
Trimmed back to shape, or reduced in height, without cutting into old brown wood that won't grow back.
Privet, laurel and beech
Cut to a clean line on the sides and top, with the shape you want kept from year to year.
Tall hedges
Up to about 4 metres with ladders and long reach pole cutters. Taller than that, we'll say so honestly.

Common questions
Do you cover Bancffosfelen and Drefach?
Yes, along with Pontyates, Ponthenri, Llanddarog and Tumble. We work right up the Gwendraeth valley.
Have you worked in Pontyberem before?
Yes, plenty of times. We cleared an overgrown garden for new owners in Pontyberem and filmed the whole job. You can see it on our Pontyberem job page.
Do you do hedge cutting all over Pontyberem?
Yes, across Pontyberem (SA15) and nearby Bancffosfelen, Drefach, Pontyates, Ponthenri, Llanddarog and Tumble. Pontyberem is about fifteen minutes up the Gwendraeth valley from Kidwelly.
Can a conifer hedge be cut right back?
Only so far. Most conifers won't regrow from old brown wood, so we'll tell you how far yours can safely come down.
When is the best time to cut a hedge?
Late summer through to winter is easiest, once most birds have finished nesting. We can still trim in spring and summer, but we always check for active nests first.
