What we walked into
Nearly two years before we turned up, another company had been given his back door key to clear the garden, then lost it. The gate was blocked by a big tree, so there was no way in at all, and he'd been leaning out of the window cutting brambles back with a butter knife.
Once he had a new key cut, we went in. Brambles, buddleia and small trees had taken the lot. By the end of the day we'd found patios and concrete paths nobody knew were still there, and he put the garden straight on to fortnightly maintenance.

Step by step
Hedge cutters near the glass
Hedge cutters rather than blades close to the windows and doors.
Blades on the brambles
Brushcutters with blades on the open ground.
Chainsaw on the trees
The small trees and buddleia cut down with a chainsaw.
Clear and take away
Everything bagged and taken away, included in the £530.
Picking the right tool near windows
A brushcutter blade can flick stones and bits of debris a long way. Near glass we switch to hedge cutters, which are slower but don't throw anything.
Buddleia is worth getting out early. It seeds everywhere, grows fast and roots into walls and paving if it's left.
