What we walked into
Every day she was squeezing down a narrow path she'd cut herself, just to get to her own back door. The brambles had spread over from the empty house next door and taken over everything either side of it.
The ground was full of bricks and breeze blocks hidden in the growth, so this was blades only. We cleared it in a full day, then she had us do the driveway and paths as well.

Step by step
Cut along the path
Worked out from the path she had cut, widening it as we went.
Blades, not flail
Brushcutters with blades so we could feel what we were hitting and stop.
Lift the rubble
Bricks and breeze blocks picked out by hand as they turned up.
Finish the hard areas
Driveway and paths cleared on top, so the whole front and back were done in one go.
Why we don't flail ground like this
A flail mower is quick on clean ground, but bricks and blocks hidden in brambles get thrown out at speed, break the machine and can go through a window. On rubble filled ground a blade lets you feel the obstruction and stop.
If you've got an overgrown area next to an empty property, it's worth getting on top of it early, because brambles root wherever the stems touch the ground and spread fast.
