What we walked into

A full lawn renovation on a front lawn in Kidwelly, about 83 square metres. The old lawn was weed killed, scalped down in stages, scarified in three directions, topdressed and reseeded.

The full renovation came to £695. The after photo looks bare on purpose: it's the new seedbed, before the grass comes through.

Done in Kidwelly in September 2026.

What we did

Step by step

  1. Total weed kill, £120

A total kill weed killer across the full 83 square metres, with follow up spot treatment of any perennial weeds that survived. It needs at least 10 to 14 days to reach the roots before the renovation starts.

  2. Scalp and scarify, £220

The dead grass scalp mowed in stages with everything boxed, then scarified in three directions to strip the dead material and thatch back to soil level. All the debris taken away.

  3. Topdress, £220

About a cubic metre of screened topsoil and compost blend spread at around 10mm, then luted and raked to a firm, even seedbed.

  4. Feed and seed, £135

Pre-seed fertiliser at 35g per square metre to drive root growth, then seed at 40g per square metre, raked in and firmed.

Worth knowing

Why wait two weeks after the weed kill?

The weed killer needs at least 10 to 14 days to work its way down to the roots. If the ground is worked any earlier, deep rooted weeds can grow straight back up through the new lawn, so that gap is part of the job.

Once the seed is down, it needs keeping moist for the first three to four weeks, with a light watering every day in dry weather. The first cut is usually around four to six weeks after sowing, once the grass is roughly 7cm.
